Transfer news: Manchester United to pay £15million for Thomas Vermaelen

Manchester United look to beat Barcelona in the chase to sign Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen.

The Arsenal leader may come as a fairly cheap replacement for Nemanja Vidic, who recently left to Inter Milan after a eight year stint at Old Trafford. Barcelona looked to have taken pole position in the race to sign the 28-year-old Belgium international on Tuesday when they made a bid of £10million for the player.

However, Sky sources have revealed that United are Vermaelen’s preferred destination and the Old Trafford club will have no problem beating Barca’s offer.

Vermaelen’s future at Arsenal has been the subject of speculation all summer, with the centre-back entering the final year of his contract at the Emirates.

Manager Louis van Gaal is anxious for more signings following the club’s return from their pre-season tour in America and wants to close deals for Vermaelen and Ajax wing-back Daley Blind before his Premier League bow against Swansea City on August 16.

Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward accepts he will have to pay a premium price for Vermaelen however because Arsenal would prefer to see him go to La Liga than play for one of their Premier League rivals.

He is no longer first choice for the Gunners, with boss Arsene Wenger preferring the centre-back pairing of Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny last season.

Wenger also revealed last week he could not be certain Vermaelen would stay, as he could not guarantee the defender first-team football.

Vermaelen started just seven Premier League games last term and it seems the player is keen to move on, with United looking an ideal destination for him as new manager Louis van Gaal seeks to increase his defensive options.

NEW look Barcelona Starting Lineup (2014/2015)

Barcelona have sealed Luis Suarez so the front three at Barca is going to be something to look out for. Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez!

“Can they play together?”

Many have asked the question regarding the trio. Is Luis Suarez’s ego going to be affected by the presence of Lionel Messi and vice-versa.  Maybe this will replicate the situation of the Zlatan Ibrahimovic arrival in 2009. Time will tell!

With the exit of Barcelona legend Carlos Puyol, the expected departure of Barcelona’s midfield maestro Xavi and arrival of new manager Luis Enrique, it is definitely a new beginning for the Catalan giants. There could be a potential patchy period in the near future of Barcelona!

Cesc Fabregas looks set to leave Barcelona!

It looks like Cesc Fabregas time second stay at Barcelona may coming to a surprising end after the missing the club’s photo shoot.

There has been a lot of speculation from newspapers such as Daily Express who suggest he may be on his way to Manchester United or Arsenal after being left out of Barcelona’s kit launch.

All the big guns including Lionel Messi, Xavi Hernandez, Neymar and Gerard Pique, but Cesc Fabregas wasn’t present. It echoes memories of when Thiago Alcantara was left out prior to his move to Bayern Munich last summer.

With both Manchester United and Arsenal ready to pounce on the Catalan playmaker, it seems the asking price of £45 million may be paid. Will Barcelona really let him go with Xavi’s playing days soon coming to an end?

BREAKING NEWS: Barcelona banned from making transfers in the next two windows (sourced from Sky Sports)

Barcelona have been banned from transferring players in the next two windows by FIFA.

The Spanish giants are deemed to have breached rules relating to the “international transfers of non-Spanish minors”, according to a statement from the game’s governing body, and they have also been fined along with the Spanish FA (RFEF).

Following investigations by both the FIFA Transfer Matching System and the Disciplinary Committee, Barcelona and the RFEF have both been found to have violated several provisions of the Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players, as well as other regulations regarding the registration and participation of certain players in national competitions.

The FIFA statement added: “The disciplinary committee emphasised that the protection of minors in the context of international transfers is an important social and legal issue that concerns all stakeholders in football.

“The committee highlighted that while international transfers might, in specific cases, be favourable to a young player’s sporting career, they are very likely to be contrary to the best interests of the player as a minor.

Barcelona have been given a year-long transfer ban by FIFA after breaching the rules on transfers of players under 18.

“Young football players are vulnerable to exploitation and abuse in a foreign country without the proper controls. This particular fact makes the protection of minors in football by the sport’s governing bodies, especially by FIFA, even more important.”

The Spanish FA, which violated article 19 of the regulations regarding the first registration of the players, has been given a period of one year in to regularise their regulatory framework and existing system concerning the international transfer of minors in football”.

Barcelona will almost certainly appeal against the transfer ban, which has cast a shadow of doubt over moves already agreed for Borussia Monchengladbach keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Croatian 17-year-old Alen Halilovic, who turns 18 in June.

Barcelona have a trio of youth players from South Korea, including much-sought after 15-year-old striker Lee Seung Woo, plus other players from Africa. FIFA only allows international youth transfers when one of three situations apply: the player’s parents have moved country for their own, non-related reasons; the move takes place within the European Union if a player is aged between 16 and 18; or the player’s home is less than 50 kilometres from the national border being crossed.

Sky Sports Spanish football expert, Guillem Balague, said: “The immediate reaction is shock, but at same time there have been so many cases not investigated for so many years, not just at Barcelona but at other clubs too.

“Barcelona say they are calm and they believe they have an explanation as to why and how these players have been signed.  I very much doubt Barcelona would do that illegally and they must have some explanation.”

Invincible Man City?

man city

As as we are now well into the second half of the Premier League season one can only question Manchester City’s Phenomenal strength. Once again today the blue half of Manchester strolled to yet another convincing win, beating Cardiff 4-2 at the Etihad Stadium. Edin Dzeko scored the opener on the 10th minute which marked their 100th Goal this season.  Other Goal Scorers included new summer recruit Jesus Navas, as well as the Powerhouse in midfield Yaya Toure and “Mr. Reliable” Sergio Agüero. Vincent Kompany recently stated that it would only be “A Matter Of Time” before Manchester City win the Quadruple and that they believe they can do it this year.

The only problem in the way of Manchester City at the moment is in February when they have to Face Barcelona in the Champions League Last 16. With Lionel Messi and other Star Quality Players such as Neymar, Manchester City will have to be on their Extreme Best to Knock Out the Catalan Giants.
